Our Surrogacy Program Offers Another Path to Parenthood
If you are interested in becoming an egg donor at our state-of-the-art fertility clinic in San Antonio, TX, our egg donation FAQ page can provide you with answers to commonly asked questions regarding the process, candidacy, and long-term effects. Egg donation provides couples struggling with infertility the opportunity to conceive or achieve a healthy pregnancy with a surrogate. At Fertility Center of San Antonio, we thoroughly vet the egg donor and potential recipient to ensure a healthy match. We can also answer any additional questions during a private consultation.
After being matched with a recipient, the egg donation process typically lasts about 10 weeks.
Who Can Become an Egg Donor?
Women between the ages of 21 and 30, who are in good overall health and have normal ovulation cycles, are generally candidates for egg donation. The vetting process includes a review of your family history to ensure there are no psychological illnesses, genetic disorders, or other conditions that could result in an unhealthy pregnancy. Policies are set in place to increase chances for pregnancy, as well as ensure the process is safe for both the donor and recipient.
What Does Egg Donation Involve?
The first step to beginning the egg donation process involves filling out a detailed questionnaire. Once your questionnaire is received, a member of our team can contact you to begin the screening process. This includes a physical examination and interview with our specialist. We may request additional photos of you and your family, but your identity will remain anonymous to the potential recipient.
Women between the ages of 21 and 30, who are in good overall health and have normal ovulation cycles, are generally candidates for egg donation.
During your interview, we can explain the steps involved in egg donation, including the medications required, the procedure, and potential risks. Once you qualify as an egg donor, you will be listed in our online database and contacted after matching with a recipient.
How Long Does the Process Take?
The amount of time it takes to be chosen by a recipient varies for each donor. However, once you are chosen, the overall length of the process generally takes about 10 weeks to complete. The first six weeks involves additional screening. The remaining three to four weeks includes egg retrieval.
Is the Process Painful?
The egg retrieval procedure can be uncomfortable, but your experience ultimately depends on your response to the medications involved. To enhance your fertility, you will undergo a series of injections to stimulate your egg production. Side effects can include hot flashes, mood swings, fatigue, breast tenderness, as well as soreness and mild bruising near the injection site.
Once the eggs are ready, you will undergo a minor surgical procedure for retrieval. Our team can administer anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire process. You may feel tired and sore for a few days after the procedure.
Will I Be Able to Have Children After Donating Eggs?
Yes. Egg donation does not have any long-term effects on your fertility.
What Are the Risks?
The primary risk includes the development of Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). While undergoing fertility boosting injections, the ovaries can house excess fluid, become enlarged, and cause abdominal bloating, weight gain, pelvic pain, and pelvic inflammation. It is also possible for the needle to puncture organs or surrounding tissues, causing bleeding, pain, and infection.
Will I Be Compensated?
The amount of compensation varies for egg donation. It is based on the location of the fertility clinic and your experience as an egg donor. All of your medical expenses, travel expenses, and lawyer fees will be paid for by the recipient. Once the egg donation cycle is complete, compensation can range from $5,000 to $10,000.
